George Henning (1839- 1921)

George Henning was born in 1839 in Washtenaw County, Michigan, the son of James Henning and Mary Ferguson.

In the fall of 1876 George was an employee of  Nathan Rumsey. A confrontation between the two men resulted in George kicking Mr. Rumsey and a few days later Mr. Rumsey died as a result from his injury. On Friday April 6, 1877, George Henning  was charged with killing Nathan Rumsey, at Dexter. He changed his plea of not guilty to guilty of manslaughter. George served four years at state prison in Jackson, Michigan.

In the 1880 US Federal census George was still incarcerated at Jackson. The census showed his occupation as a hospital attendant.

From George's release from prison to before the 1910 census his whereabouts are unknown.

The 1910 census reveals George married an Alice (b. abt. 1858, MI).  The 1920 census gave some clues. George had a granddaughter, Ella Henning Vetro (b. abt. 1905, MI). living with him and Alice. So we can assume that  he had a at least one known child, a daughter who married a VETRO.

George died on October 18, 1921 at the family homestead in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan.

I haven't been able to find out any more information on Alice or the Ella.
