Seymour Lathrop (1839 - 1864)

Seymour Lathrop (1839 - 1864),  the son of  Orvil LATHROP of Pittsfield, Washtenaw, Michigan. Seymour was born in 1839 in Michigan and
died in December 24,1864.

The only information I had of Seymour was his birth and death year that was on a handwritten and hand drawn family chart. My gr- grandfather didn't know the connection to the family.

I began with the 1850 Federal census and I found Seymour with his family. He was listed as Taymor and as a female.

I looked and looked for Seymour in the 1860 Federal census and couldn't find him anywhere. One day I searched Google for Ann Arbor city directories and found an entry for Seymour Lathrop. He was a blacksmith at Lawson & Wurster and residing at the Cook's hotel. I started a new search for him by looking up the Cook's Hotel in the city directory to find the owners name. Back I went to the 1860 census to look for Mr. Cook and found that he lived on the hotel site. I scrolled through the names and occupations and found  Seymour, actually he used a different name but all the information, the age, state born, and occupation were compatible.

In the 1860 US Federal Census Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, MI census, Seymour LATHROP was found as a boarder at Cook's Hotel. Seymour was a blacksmith at Lawson & Wurster.

I found in the civil war archive that in 1861 he enlisted in the civil war with the 1st Regiment, Michigan Infantry (3 months, 1861)

"Organized at Fort Wayne, Detroit, Mich., and mustered into United States service May 1, 1861 (the only three-months Regiment from Michigan). Left State for Washington, D.C., May 13. Occupation of Arlington Heights, Va., May 24. Attached to Willcox's Brigade, Heintzelman's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia. Duty in the Defences of Washington, D.C., till July 16. Action at Arlington Mills June 1 (Co. "E"). Advance on Manassas, Va., July 16-21. Battle of Bull Run July 21. Mustered out August 7, 1861."

I checked for any pension applications. None were found. That tells me Seymour probably didn't marry or have issue.

No death record has been found for Seymour.

Seymour is buried in the HENNING Family Plot in Ann Arbor, MI.

Edwin Henning died October 19, 1918 at his residence 4839 Dorchester Avenue Chicago, Ill, aged sixty six years. He was born in 1852 at Ann Arbor Mich where he attended the University of Michigan and after graduating he started in the cooperage business with his father David Henning who was operating several
slack and tight stave mills and two cooper shops at Ypsilanti and Williamston Michigan. The business was founded by his father in 1856 and the cooperage end
has been continued ever since. It is worthy of note that David Henning was the originator of the packing of apples in barrels and was widely known throughout
the apple producing territory as the apple king.

 E. Henning has not been personally active in the cooperage business for the past twenty years devoting his attention to other interests among which might be
mentioned the Leavenworth Kansas Gas Co, Springfield Mo Gas & Electric Co and at the time of his death he was president of the Calhoun Gas Co of Battle Creek, Mich. He was a member of the Chicago Athletic Club the South Shore Country Club and the Los Angeles Cal Athletic and Country Clubs having large personal interests in Los Angeles He was also afliliated with the Alumnae of the University of Michigan and was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade for many years. He is survived by his widow. The business of E. Henning, Inc., 105 South La Salle Street, Chicago which is a continuation of that founded by David Henning in 1856 will be carried on as heretofore and the investment Mr. Henning had in the company will also remain in it Mr. M Taafie being named by his will as
executor of the estate to serve without bond Mr. Henning was a liberal contributor to all deserving charities irrespective of creed or nationality. He was held in high esteem by all his friends in the cooperage business in which he was very well known some years ago having been an important factor in the eighteen hundred and eighties when he succeeded to that part of the business on the death of his father.

Plantagenet Crest

Plantagenet Crest features a red dragon or lion similar to that alluded to by Queen Elizabeth during the investiture of Prince Charles. This is the arms of the Hapsburg and Hapsburg-Lorraine dynasties of Europe, to whom the Windsors are related. The Dragon Bloodline has been preserved in the Merovingian, Carolingian, Tudor, Plantagenet, Stuart, Hapsburg, Hanoverian, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Guelph, Bowes-Lyon, Battenberg (Mountbatten), Guise and Savoy families, as well as others. The powerful Plantagenet kings of England were part of the Angevin dynasty of France, and were known as the House of Anjou. They were, like the Bourbons and House of Orleans, a branch of the Capetian dynasty of Europe. The word capet means the "Big Heads" or "Chiefs."

MARY BARTON or MARY PORTER

There seems to be confusion about these two women. Some people think their the same person and others disagree that they are two different wives of Elijah LATHROP (1775-1871). There is a Mary LATHROP buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in the LATHROP area. Is it the grave of one of the above or neither? Elijah LATHROP's brother George's wife was named Mary.

At Ancestry.com the biography listing for Elijah LATHROP states:
"Born in Lebanon, New Hampshire, USA on 24 Feb 1775 to Elijah Lathrop and Elizabeth Elderkin. Elijah married Mary Porter and had 5 children. He passed away on 1871".

A marriage record for Elijah & Mary Porter has Mary named Polly.

NAME:
Elijah Lathrop
SPOUSE:
Polly Porter
MARRIAGE:
26 Aug 1804 - Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire

According to the book "History of Washtenaw County, Michigan and biographies of representative" it states that "Elijah Ltahrop (deceased) was born at Lebanon, Conn., Feb. 25,1776, and was married to Mary Barton Aug 26, 1809. He located land on section 18, Pittsfield tp., Sept. 28, 1832. His wife died Feb. 25, 1846, and he lived with his son the remainder of his life. Mr. Lathrop died Aug. 25, 1871, aged 95 years".

With that above information we can say:

Elijah LATHROP married Mary PORTER 26 Aug 1804 at Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire and Mary BARTON on August 26, 1809.

NEW QUESTION:

Which Mother belongs to which child?

In the Huntington Memoirs Elijah LATHROP's children are listed as:
"children of Elijah Lathrop and Mary Porter are"

           Horace Lathrop, born 1806

           Orville Lathrop, born 1808

           Nelson Lathrop, born 1810

           Edwin Lathrop, born 1812

           Lucinda Lathrop, born 1815

ANSWER:

1806  Horace Lathrop, born 10 feb 1806 Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire

1808  Orville Lathrop, born 1808 Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire

Married Mary BARTON in 1809.

1810        Nelson Lathrop, born 1810 Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire

1812       Edwin Lathrop, born 1812 Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire

1815         Lucinda Lathrop, born 1815, Batavia, Genesee, New York
